“206” – Action #2

Hotel Startup Guy · May 15, 2018 ·

Business Plan Topic:

Coinciding with the official first blog entry (and the week of revisions needed to comfortably publish it), the framework of the business plan itself has been constantly top of mind.  Driving home from work today, the question racking my brain was “what are the bones of the plan?” Today’s action is formulating (…aka actually typing…) the framework of the business plan. This business – which I am treating like a living/breathing being – has at least 206 bones like an adult human body, which means today I am setting myself up with 206 questions to initially answer.  (Note to readers… I started this entry on May 6th, then started the business plan framework and published it last night, hence the timeline skew on here with actual posting May 14th)

Why is this important now? Well… I gotta start somewhere.  Please refer to this week’s inspirational quote below…  And click here to see today’s hotel startup plan updates. (Ahhh! See what I did there with some SEO!)

In order to get the list started, I reviewed notes from old school projects, as well as these resources:

  • Growthink.com – I will link to this article soon
  • Designhill.com – I will link to this article soon
  • SCORE – I will link to this soon as well. SCORE is a classroom resource sponsored locally.
  • Youtube: A few videos on business startups and hotel business plans. I will link this as soon as I shore up my Youtube channel*.

*Note on Youtube – I went to claim the name of my site, but learned I need at least 100 followers in order to do so. I’ll be asking some TPP’s about this…

TPP – Third Party Professional

This week I met with someone very close to me who is interested (and very capable) of specializing in one of the hotel’s key offerings. He is well-educated, well-spoken, a natural leader and motivator, and most importantly, someone I trust implicitly. For now, he and I are working on a separate business plan (as noted in The Plan) which fills a specific need & niche for generating and retaining clientele which happens to assist in fulfilling one of the “why’s” I’m even tackling this crazy dream in the first place.

Field Trip

This week did not include a field trip. I have the vision firmly in place as to where the first field trip will take place, but alas, I need to obtain the proper camera for this. After online research and speaking with several teammates at Best Buy, I apparently have a lot to learn about ‘vlogging cameras’… Just writing this is frustrating to the point where I will now shoot a text message to an old friend who is a very successful cameraman for some advice.  Stay tuned…

Outsource

After writing out the ‘bones’ of the business plan, I discovered A LOT of areas I will need to outsource. After writing the previous paragraph, however, I don’t feel confident I will make it far in the vlogging world without some immediate help. I want that portion of the project to jump right away, so seeking a videographer and/or editor will be this week’s outsourcing mission. I’m thinking of a college student, so my fingers are crossed on this. I may also post an ad on Craigslist. Stay tuned…

Commitment

Fortunately the main commitment made to myself was fulfilled: post the first version (12 pages) of The Plan. I have so many interesting and challenging questions to answer that I almost don’t know where to start with it. I will for sure complete these steps this week:

  1. Seek advice from my videographer friend
  2. Reach out to my attorney (again) whose interest was piqued when I ran this whole idea by them… I’m doing this now because I want to ensure the proper legal structures are addressed early, and I want to lock down the name(s). I also want their advice regarding any legal documents necessary to begin the vlogging (social media release waivers, etc.)
  3. Complete the TPP intro letter: “Hi, I’m Mark… would you like to be a part of my project?” Then have my attorney review that as well because it coincides with release waivers.

Inspiration

Considering the events of this week… I’d say this quote speaks for itself as inspiration!

Bible Verse

As this week drew on, a strange coincidence took place. The same verse that’s been the backdrop of my cell phone wallpaper for a few years is the same verse that jumped out tonight. Maybe not so much coincidence, but wildly topical when facing the fear of starting the business plan framework.  I know for sure those first 12 pages typed themselves (and quickly) with this verse below as a foundation.

Proverbs 3: 5-6

Trust in the Lord with your heart and lean not on your own understanding;

In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight

Enlightenment

The last few months have brought very interesting and intriguing lessons to light as I learn more about Buddhist principles. This week I researched Buddhist perspectives on business, and again, discovered something strangely so topical to my life at the moment. I came across an article reviewing some insights of Mr. Kazuo Inamori, the 83-year old billionaire and Buddhist priest who established the Kyocera Corp (electronics and cell phones) and rescued Japan Airlines from its bankruptcy. His #1 policy: forget the shareholders, focus on the staff. “If you want eggs, take care of the hen,” he says. “If you bull or kill the hen, it’s not going to work.” As I continue honing in on the “future hospitality leaders” training ground aspect of this operation, I look forward to researching Inamori’s views. Further, I am currently tackling this area of my ‘real’ job as the annual Associate Engagement Survey draws near. I am proud (in the positive/professional way) of the engagement scores attained over the last few years in the departments I’ve overseen, but this year’s will be a challenge. I’m “taking care of the hens” in a variety of ways, all of which will end up in the “Aloha Management Memoirs” at some point! But I digress… stay tuned for more on Mr. Inamori’s views on Buddhist principles in the workplace and how his perspectives have positively impacted thousands of his employees and millions of customers.

Sacrifice

This week definitely included some sleep sacrifice to bring all these thoughts to the computer. No nights saw my head on the pillow before 11pm. I also turned down a boys trip to Payson. And of course I had to work heading in to the busy holiday weekend in which we did over $115,000 in revenue on Mother’s Day.

Personal Anecdote

Man… this is not going to be easy! Anxiety has been abundant in all aspects of life this week.  Work (my actual job) was angst-ridden building up to the holiday.  Home life had its ups and downs in a few ways, and some business investments I’ve been managing brought about some unexpected headaches. (Note… if you ever own a rental property, be sure to vet out your renters closely!) But all in all, I thank God for the opportunity to chase my dream, keep my head above water, and continue realigning my focus towards realizing my purposes. Lastly, if you’ve never listed to Pastor TD Jakes, you are missing out. I have his sermons on nonstop in the car or in my headphones at the gym.

Goodnight!

THE Plan

Hotel Startup Guy · May 14, 2018 ·

Welcome to THE PLAN! I’m not sure if I can (or should) count the hours/months/years of brainstorming sessions that accumulated in order to bring us to this point, but no matter what, we are finally here and doing it! Below you will find the initial blueprint of our path to obtaining financing and actually bringing this dream to life.

As you see in entry “206”, the list below originally sounded cool by correlating the business plan framework to the human body, thus needing 206 ‘bones’ to get started, which sounded like a lot that first day!

Well… after four nights of typing the first 12 pages, we actually begin this journey with over 400 bones (questions) to initially answer, with at least that many more to be added along the way. My commitment is to chip away at these questions daily, and record all new questions/solutions while being readily available to review with interested parties.  This Business Plan page will be the home of the ‘black & white’ plan (minus any sensitive or proprietary details) while the Blog/Vlog page will add more background to the project.

**Note to interested Investors, Partners, Friends, Family, Colleagues and Strangers – If you have ANY interest in joining this dream, please don’t hesitate to contact me anytime: hotelstartupguy@gmail.com

Further updates to the actual plan will take place offline, but the additions will be summarized via this page. This first version is 12 pages, and it’s looking like 24 pages will round out the entire plan when complete, not including the financial projection charts and appendices.  As promised throughout this process, education and transparency is my commitment to both purposes of this whole crazy project, so please feel free to keep me in check if I’ve left too many important points out!

The Weekly Template: Action #1

Hotel Startup Guy · May 6, 2018 ·

Here it goes… the first real blog entry!

As a reminder to HSUG visitors (and to myself), I have never written a blog before. I’ve perused many in the last few months, picking up framework ideas along the way. I could be wrong here… but my brain keeps wanting this format, so here goes.

*Note 1: I’m a bit worried about finding my ‘voice’ in all this, but I’m assuming that will evolve. (Insert emoji of questionable shoulder shrug…)

*Note 2: I have also completely overlooked any and all aspects of SEO in this post, so that will be part of the immediate study plans before the next entry.

Thinking with the end in mind by way of a first & second goal:

The weekly blog posts are intended to enhance the creation of the actual business plan. When the light bulb went on, I realized this is actually the second goal. The second goal, defined, is the physical manifestation of the hotel.  But in order to obtain the hefty investment capital required to construct the building (and actually be in business), I have to actualize goal #1: turning these entries into multiple media formats supporting the “SharkTank-Gone-Backwards” program.  The day this became clear was the day I purchased a WordPress site and got to actual work (mid April 2018).

Rationale :  Need to make business plan to attract investors → led to→ need to make money along the way → led to→  lots of confusion/meditation → led to→ purpose rediscovered was to help others do this too → led to→ redirect action plan to create education-based format to accomplish the business plan creation → led to→ attract investors, partners and future clientele → led to→ realize dream/achieve success!

Getting started, I needed a few blogging basics. Below are some quick Google tidbits:

  • Effective blogs range between 750-1000 words (FYI, this post is nearly 1400 words! oops…)
  • Absolutely need proper grammar and spelling to maintain credibility
  • Include two images, one that invokes thought(logic) and one that invokes emotion
  • Include at least one link, whether to drive traffic or route readers to a revenue stream
  • Need request for comments or a question to invite interaction (with possible incentive)
  • Cliffhanger – I threw this one in here… but only because I’m treating this blog like a TV show that hitches readers/viewers along for the ride in hopes of converting interest in to investment

My gut says this template will work:

Topic Name – A clever name with chronology. This one is called: The Weekly Template: Action #1. The clever name might hook a reader, just like a newspaper headline (but it primarily keeps my mind straight, to be honest). And rather than ‘chapter one’ or ‘volume one’ which would read like a book, I choose “Action” because NONE of this will move forward without action.

Business Plan Topic – Which part of the business plan does this blog entry relate to? What questions do I need to answer this week in order to move forward, and my rationale behind it. This creates value to me in that it helps backfill the frame of the business plan. It also helps me create a guidebook by rationalizing the timing that seems to make chronological sense. I’m willing to bet that smarter business people will disagree, and if so, please call me and offer advice!

TPP (Third Party Professional) – Who (or what) professional partner is needed to assist in tackling this portion of the business plan? A lawyer to assist with company legal structure? An architect to draw rough plans? A GC to offer rough estimates per square foot?  In a perfect week, this will include a vlog and youtube link to a video interview of this professional.  Insert “model/likeness release form” here to cover my butt.

Field Trip – The ‘where’ is of incredible value to me, in that it A) sparked inspiration or B) led me further down this rabbit hole. For instance, the first video will be filmed at the first resort I worked at. Inspiration was limitless in those days, and vivid memories of that experience will be weaved in to this project. Another video might be in the office of a TPP in order to understand how they derive conclusions needed to build the business plan. I hope some of them have cool offices… with Keurigs.

Outsource – Taken straight from Timothy Ferriss’ “The 4-Hour Work Week”, I need to constantly arrange how much of this business I can outsource or streamline.  Whether it’s social media, accounting, errand running, client research, etc. I want to take non-revenue producing activities off my plate before they even get there.

Commitment (Cliffhanger) – Here I’ll tackle what my gut is telling me to do next. This may also be discovered after guidance from the TPP. Flexibility is key here, but all actions are good if it means getting closer to the money (Yes, shameless, but honest).  Secondary to giving me a to-do list for the week, I’m hoping to build viewership which keeps me accountable for new content, and ultimately build momentum for the Reverse-Shark Tank show.

Inspiration  – A quote or memorable phrase I lean towards? An Instagram post that made me pause and take a screen shot? An architectural Pinterest that needs to be included for the design team? Or could be a link to a book/author I’m reading this week. Simon Sinek will be among the first. And Grant Cardone.

Bible Verse – None of this can happen if it isn’t His plan. It seems fitting to include His guidance as these lessons become visible in both business and life. I have a hunch there is a verse that lends itself to each aspect of the business plan. Clearly I need to start reading the bible again…

Enlightenment – As I strive to learn more about the values & principles of Buddhist perspectives, my personal interests are piqued the more I absorb the Buddha’s teachings, and how those lessons apply to this week’s professional or personal growth, and even how they assist in defining certain aspects of my managerial style.

Sacrifice: What did I sacrifice this week to move forward? Time? Sleep? A special event with friends? Watching the Cardinals or a NBA playoff game?  As I scoured Youtubes of business startups, the biggest names in the game all made videos describing how much they sacrificed to reach their goal. As mentioned in the About Us page, my dream comes with a price tag too. This spot seems like the place to reference some of the tangible and intangible costs of achieving this dream.

Personal Anecdote -A personal Seinfeld-like moment? A random thought, business related or not? Maybe some insight on my personal life? What my friends are up to? What sidetracked me this week? Random funny? Random sad? Random stupid? Food or drink interests of the week? Health or fitness topics I liked or tackled this week?  And perhaps this perspective is just in my head… but if I were an investor looking to offer money to the Hotel Startup Guy, I’d want to know more about the man behind the blog.

The topics above should absolutely fill the hours between my two day jobs, a gym visit, any errands and walking the pup. I may even throw in a few of these if they seem pertinent:

  • Link to the HSUG Twitter. Or a popular news page. I feel this might be a blatant attempt to get page views, but I’ll leave that opinion up to the TPP’s with whom I broach this topic.
  • Shameless plea to investors? Maybe my attorney should craft this message…
  • Link to Amazon Affiliate pages? This is an entirely separate aspect of the business I look forward to making an entry about soon.
  • An entry in to the never-ending ‘hotel manager memoirs’.
  • A topic that readers/viewers would like me to approach?

And with that… We are officially on this journey. First blog post in the bag.

Goodnight!
